American Candie Kung shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday to win the LPGA Kolon Championship by one shot over Australian Katherine Hull.

Kung, who was born in Taiwan, eagled the ninth hole during a windy third round at Incheon’s Sky 72 Golf Club course. That gave her the cushion she needed when she dropped a shot on the next-to-last hole. The world’s 42nd-ranked player finished at 6-under 210 and collected US$240,000 for the win

Next Monday, some of the most recognizable names in professional golf will arrive at Shell Landing Golf Club in Gautier for the third annual Habitat for Humanity Katrina Pro-Am.

Eighteen PGA Tour pros are expected at this year’s event, including veterans Bob Tway, Woody Austin, Jerry Kelly and former University of South Alabama standout Heath Slocumb.

The tournament benefits the Gulf Coast chapter of Habitat, which builds homes in Jackson, Harrison and Stone counties

Habitat has built six area homes in the past two years with funds raised at the pro-am, and organizers expect similar results from this year’s event.

The pro-am is the brainchild of PGA Tour rules official Mickey Bradley, an Ocean Springs resident.

CHARLES SCHWAB CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

Posted by golfnut

Andy Bean was a 6-foot-4, 195-pound college freshman when he had his chance to play the South’s sport of choice. Bean and his fellow University of Florida golfers were playing a touch football game, against the tennis and swimming teams, and then-Gators football coach Doug Dickey noticed the tall kid launching booming punts.

Dickey asked Bean if he would consider joining the football team. “No, sir, I play golf,” Bean responded. Dickey persisted and Bean finally offered one rock-solid reason for his reluctance to switch sports:

“Coach, your line’s not good enough,” he said.

The four Order of Merit contenders were far from pleased over the scheduling Saturday at the Volvo Masters after the 57-man field finally completed the rain-delayed second round.

Only three players finished on Friday before torrential rain forced organizers to suspend play. With officials looking to get at least 54 holes in with rain still falling Saturday and expected for Sunday, players couldn’t understand why officials waited to redraw pairings rather than send players out straight away after their completed second rounds.

Tiger has new territory to conquer

Posted by golfnut

Tiger Woods pop-ins are always welcome, but especially when he has been so conspicuous by his absence. Last week during two public appearances in Southern California, the recently named “most powerful person in sports” appeared in fine fettle — a little leaner through the shoulders, hair a bit longer, hairline a bit higher, no limp.

Competitive golf remains on hold. At a brief Saturday morning clinic for his learning center at Pelican Hill near Newport Beach, Woods wore shorts that revealed a two-inch long vertical scar on his left knee attesting to this year’s surgical procedures, but no apparent signs of atrophy. Though he held a 5-iron, Fred Couples and Chris Riley hit all the shots. Woods occasionally dropped into address position and checked his takeaway, but never made so much as a lazy practice swing.

Andy Bean made five birdies in six holes through intermittent rain showers Friday, finishing at 10-under-par 134 to take a one-shot lead over Nick Price after two rounds in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Bean rolled to a 6-under 66 at Sonoma Golf Club despite lashings from a storm that is expected to blast Northern California’s wine country today. At the halfway point of the 50-and-older Champions Tour’s season-ending event, he nearly made six consecutive birdies to start the back nine, barely missing a putt on the 12th hole.

DiazLaura Diaz says she’s had two “main highlights” in her golf career.

On Friday, she added another.

With her brother, Ron, carrying her bag, Diaz shot a 9-under 63 to take a three-stroke lead after the first round of the 54-hole Grand China Air, the LPGA’s first tournament in China.

The round matched the best of her career and was capped with a 3-foot birdie putt on the 18th. Diaz finished third last week in the Kapalua Classic in Hawaii and is bidding for her first tournament victory since 2002.

Ron Philo — a well-known club pro in Vermont — filled in for Diaz’s husband, Kevin, who normally works as her caddie. Instead, he was home babysitting their young son, Cooper.

Could the change be permanent?

“I can’t afford him. He’s too expensive,” Diaz said, joking. “My husband comes a lot cheaper.”

South Korean Seon-hwa Lee was three shots back after a 66, and Karen Stupples and H.J. Choi were four shots off the pace after rounds of 67.

“You’ve got to bring it every day,” Stupples said. “You can’t sit back on your laurels and say, ‘Oh, I had one good round.’ I think every time you go out, you have to feel like you’re attacking on it. You have to be aggressive and attack the course.”

Louise Friberg and Ji-young Oh were five strokes back, and Taoli Yang had a 69, the best score of the day for a Chinese player.

The highlights of Diaz’s career, for whatever reason, all seem to revolve around either being pregnant or caddying.

She said her first highlight came in 2005 when, despite being 5 1/2 months pregnant, she caddied for her brother in the PGA Championship.

“My brother was not in favor of me doing it because of my pregnancy, but after a lot of needling he finally agreed that it would be OK,” she said. “It was a fantastic week.”

The second came just after that when she played the Solheim Cup — while pregnant. Her husband carried the bag in that one.

LaBelle II takes Frys.com Open lead

Posted by golfnut

LaBelleHome cooking must agree with Valley PGA Tour pros, because they are feasting on the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in the Frys.com Open.

Doug LaBelle II of Scottsdale knocked in three birdies on his last four holes to finish at 7-under 63 in the first round Thursday, giving him a share of the lead with John Mallinger.

Three other Valley pros were within 3 shots of the lead, as Arron Oberholser and Todd Demsey shot 65 and Robert Garrigus carded a 66. Defending champion Mike Weir also shot 66, as 68 of the 132 pros broke par.

Richard Johnson, who was in the first pairing of the day, shot 64, leaving the Welshman 1 shot off the lead. Three other players with the last name Johnson and one with the first name Johnson have won tour titles this year.

“Yeah, it’s going to be a shootout,” Mallinger said. “You’re going to have to make a lot of birdies these last tournaments (of the season). That’s just the way it is, the way the course is set up, but I’m OK with that.”

So is LaBelle, who last shared the lead in a PGA Tour event after the second round of this year’s FBR Open at TPC Scottsdale.

We’re here in my second home, Scottsdale, Ariz., for my last competitive tournament on the PGA Tour this season, the www.Frys.com open. It’s really nice to be able to sleep in my own bed and be at home when I come home from the course during the day.

Last week was the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Shriners Hospitals for Children was a new sponsor, and it was really cool having Justin Timberlake as a host. From what I heard and saw, Justin put a lot of time and effort into making it one of the best events on Tour.

Justin played in the Monday and Wednesday Pro-Ams, and put on a clinic on Saturday for some Shriners kids. On Friday, he put on a huge concert with a bunch of stars. I went to the concert and it was incredible. Some of the stars were Leona Lewis, Boyz II Men, Rihanna, 50 Cent and Lionel Richie. The concert raised more than $1 million for Shriners Hospitals.
