The golf swing is a complex movement made up of four simple parts.
1.The body movement which is usually refered to as rotation; though I feel this is a misnomer.
2.A raising and lowering of the arms; in other words not much lateral movement relative to the sternum.
3.A cocking and uncocking of the wrists, directly towards the left thumb and away from it, radial and unlar movement.
4. Lower arm rotation which sets the club shaft in the plane (or at the right pitch) in the back swing and which squares-up the club face at impact.

The first step, in developing a good swing, is to train the correct body movement. The back swing is a taking away of the right side in a movement directly away from the target line; followed by a lateral shift to the left with the left knee and pelvis in the transition phase between the back swing and downswing and then a strong thrusting back from the target line with the left hip coupled with a drive of the right knee as the club is "released down and through the ball
References :
48 years golf-pro: also check out Dr. Ralf Mann "Swing like a Pro" and David Leadbetter "The Fundamentals of Hogan"

Don't listen to anything anyone says because then everything you hear will run through your head during your back swing and will make your swing worse than it already is.. Just relax and have fun and in time you will get better no matter how bad you are.. Practice makes Perfect.
References :
I disagree with those that say it is 100% necessary to take lessons. I started playing golf when I was 10 years old and I have never once taken a lesson. Now I'm 24 and I can shoot in the high 70's or low 80's. I'm by no means a pro but if you just want to play for fun and get somewhat decent, you can teach yourself.
References :
I would suggest going to a PGA pro for a lesson or two to get you back to where you should be. There are several websites such as pga.com and golf.com that have videos and good articles about the fundamentals to course managment.
References :
The ONLY way is to take lessons from a golf pro, may be pricey but weel worth it. I have also found that playing as opposed to spending countless hours on the driving range also helps as hitting off of "fake" grass does not help the swing. It also depends on your level of skill, have you just started to play, or do you just have the yips!! In any event, seek help my friend, you cant give yourself a haircut can you?
References :
Well, I have never taken a lesson either, but I figure out what is going wrong with my game when it happens. You can be self taught, but it requires some reading. I have subscribed to Golf Magazine and tried the tips they provide. They come from top golf teachers and it costs less than actually going to a golf teacher. I also purchased Tiger's book. He has played golf a few times in his life. I would take this approach more so than have everybody and their mom and dad tell you how they play unless you consult a teacher.
References :
I shoot in the low to mid 80's majority of the time.

I have been playing since 1963 and learned using a traditional swing with a pronounced inside out move and hit a draw. This past season I developed a problem coming over the top and couldn't seem to get out of it so read about the "stack and tilt" and feeling I had nothing to loose gave it a try. It is weird and the key is the "jump up" at impact, but I hit the ball solidly and it is almost impossible to come over the top. After about 5 to 8 rounds I went back to my old swing, and am hitting it much better. So while I have not converted to stack and tilt forever, I hold it in reserve now as a way to get out a funk I may fall into with my normal swing.
References :
one plane (the Moe Norman Way) is probably the easiest, for me anyway. I grew up playing baseball, and it feels like a baseball swing to me, so it was a natural adjustment. There's more going on in a two-plane swing for my liking. Stack-and-Tilt seems more like a fad. Look at Aarron Baddely, it's posterboy, who flopped miserably paired w/ Tiger last year at the British Open (had the lead, threw it away with a 75 on Sunday).

You wanna try radical? In Golf Magazine, Dr. TJ Tomasi introduced the "No Backswing Swing". Just as the name implies- it's even MORE like a baseball swing than the one-plane swing. Supposedly, it eliminates 75% of backswing errors (laying off, being too steep, etc.) Their test subject even gained about 6 yards per club! Too extreme for me, but if you wanna give it a go, check out golf.com and look up the article for the finer points of the "NBS".
References :
Golf magazine subscriber
